As for classes, I would favour time based classes as per MX-5 Cup. You can't argue with the timer.
I've started contacting some people that have AR-1's. So far I like what I am getting in response.
They have E and DOT codes.
They have tread markers
No evidence of any wording about being a race tyre on them.
I still need to have a closer look at them in person to be really sure.
I am so far fairly confident we will be able to use them at NSW Supersprints under the current rules.
My homework says they are allowed in the UK for road registered class' under MSA tyre classification 1B they have over there. They get grouped with other similar Toyo R888R's, Kumho V70A etc. Don't see why it should not be similar here. Unless of course The NSW panel has something against cheap effective tyres. Nitto NT01 anyone.
I'm hoping I would be able to get the latest 225/45/15 for under $800 a set next year when I need them. Must be a new size for them because I've looked before and they were not making that size. Only 195 or 205/50/15. I also noticed that the part number starts with a JD where as all others start with a JC.
Looking at Ebay you can even get a set of 235/40/17 for just over $800. In Yokohama A050 world that would be more like $2000!!!
Even large wide 18's are under $300 a corner. Amazing.
There doesn't seem to be a Sydney dealer that is easy to find so freight may have to come into consideration.

The problem is that it favours slow drivers in high powered cars over talented drivers in low powered cars. Both will run similar lap times and hence will be in the same class, but the high powered MX5 will be much faster on the straights, making it impossible for the less powered mx5 to overtake, and will hold up the less powered mx5 in the corners. Even if the less powered mx5 manages to overtake in a corner, the high powered mx5 will easily take the position back on the next straight.
I'm half with Guss regarding time based class's for the cup.
I support the idea as it get amateurs involved and gives them something to aim for.
To me personally winning a time class by using a high powered car and driving it slowly would be like receiving a participation award at school.
The pointy end of the MX-5 cup doesn't seem to suffer this. It's real close racing with similar cars.
Winning a competition should be something built around skill.
That's why I like the idea behind one make series with the same hardware, just the costs are always a lot more than they need to be. 86 cup affordable, yeah right.
If you want to aim for a consistent time, not necessarily going flat out, regularity is for you.
NSW Supersprints definitely do not need time class's. No sprint event should have them. It is about going as fast as possible within some sort of defined category. MX-5 club days included.
NSW Supersprints sort of works out ok as there are a lot of class' and types to allow a wide range of vehicles.
And yes like most entry level motorsports there are dominant cars. Lotus Elise/Exige, Porsche 911, Mitsubishi EVO's etc. Didn't stop me taking there trophy away last year though.

Oh yeah, and ARDC rounds! The pre-event organisation and administration has been woeful. Worst I have seen. Being a big organisation they will probably have so much bureaucracy that it will be difficult for them to turn it all around. Yes I consider them a organisation, not a car club.
