Prices for NAs?

Yeah, someone else recently mentioned they dismantled a relatively high km motor & found it with similarly limited wear.

I dismantled my old B6 after wobbly crank syndrome. I found the same. Honing marks were clearly visible, however there was some minor cylinder scoring on about the same plane as the gudgeon pin. So I guessing they were slightly out of round. Tough little engines though.

I got my 93 clubman for $2.4k a couple of years back. It had been parked in my street and was neglected with a peeling clear coat and brittle soft top. I was going to make the owner an offer when a "For Sale $3k ONO" appeared on the dash. I didn't even realise it was a Clubbie until I researched into its VIN etc. It has always dríven well but respray prices are too high for me to consider for the moment so I just enjoy it from the inside! I replaced the soft top with a Robbins and bought a hardtop for $1k which allows me to park in the open. Just waiting now to put it on club plates as it is my third rego!

PS anyone able to recommend a vinyl wrap as a cheaper alternative to spraying???

That sounds like the Laguna Blue Clubman that was for sale in the St Kilda area a couple of years ago. Only 13 months to go for CPS!

My B6 has been to hell and back at least a handful of times. They are a nugget. Cant believe its still going. I must say though My cylinder walls are pretty polished. Rings are probably worn too. Its using oil. But it goes well for a B6.
Its done 40 k km in production sports, its been overheated countless times in the 5 years where I didn't care about Patchy at all & lost total interest. Ands its been trashed in the days when going up & down Putty road in my immature days....

Its pretty hard to kill them as long as the oil gets changed & you dont overheat it so the block melts.

although if you run lean on a 200 whp turbo at WOT......it will only take seconds to destroy it.

Vinyl wrap won't hide the peeling clear coat edges.

Paid $7500 for a 97 Na8 with 140,000k about 14months ago.
One owner car with fantastic service history and only minor body scratches/ scuffs.

Roof was starting to show its age so replaced that but otherwise everything is in great nick and all working beautifully.
A/C is even still ice cold!

Interesting thread to have found. I was hoping to get an NA as a cheap fun car for every now and then. Had assumed with their age and simplicity that they would be fairly reasonably priced by now (in my head I thought $3,000 to $6,000.00 range). Sadly what I've found is a bit different. There's limited MX5's for sale in Tasmania, but at present there is (ignoring automatics):

1999 NB 161,000km - $7,400.00
1995 NA 143,000km - $9,999.00
2007 NC Limited 175,000km - $10,000.00
1997 NA 122,000km - $14,250.00

It just seems to me that the NA's available are priced very very high - the NB is cheaper and the NC the same price! There are RX8's available at the same price or cheaper. A bit more gets you into a Toyota 86 or Subaru BRZ.

What people actually get for their cars is often not what they ask and sellers also sometimes tell porky's. Most of us know the value of our own cars. You can still buy good quality older NA's under $8K and in Vic there are quite a few on CP reg- thats a plus.

I think the prices of NAs are definitely on the rise. There are still good quality cars around if you look, but it can take a while. NBs or NCs are probably better value, but I really wanted an NA myself.

I've bought a few now. Still plenty 3-5k runners out there. I paid 7500 4 years ago for my 200k Malibu. I've only seen 3 for sale since, but not overly expensive. Picked up an nb8b and drove it home for 3800 with no panel damage/clear title too...

Currently the Malibu is insured for 15.5k laid up and shannons are happy to go up to 25k upon inspection once running which is good to know given the $$ invested. Sale price is probably 1/2 that if lucky.

I looked at that for a Jeep Cherokee I was working on, you need to respray for the vinyl anyway otherwise it won't stick if there is paint flaking off.

Tasmania is a small market, especially for MX5s, & prices there can be high for more sought after cars, because convenience costs, ie it costs more to buy locally than traveling to Melb or Sydney to buy a car because it's more convenient for locals.
NB8B (Oct 2000 onward build) currently represents the best value for money older MX5, with the NC1 catching-up.
Btw, the 2007 NC LE for $10k you've quoted isn't typical price-wise yet (reckon condition-wise it might not be what you're seeking), otherwise the NC1 would be the best value for money older MX5.

Also, ample size is small, limited to what's currently available, & comparing cars that will appeal to different buyers, ie low km NA & high km NC without knowing condition of same, so not really safe to draw many conclusions.

They do come up in Tas - you might have to be patient.
I picked up my NA on Gumtree for $2200 - paint was rough but the car was (is) sound.
