Info / advice on registering a modded MX5 in Victoria

Hi all,
It has been a while since I have posted on here, but I reckon there might be some people here which will have some good information for me.

I am moving to an eastern suburb in Melbourne next week and I will have to get my MX5 registered in Victoria. I'm wondering how hard it will be to get it registered in Victoria with the following mods:

Mx5 plus roll bar
Sparco sprint seats
Mca coilovers
Whiteline front sway bar
Full xforce exhaust
T2 LSD
Mx5 mania cold air intake
15x8 +15 wheels (little bit of poke)

Will these mods have to be engineered for it to be registered in Victoria?

Does any one know of a good shop to take it to for registering and/or engineering if need be?

Maybe I should strip it back to stock and engineer the mods later?

Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated!

Mx5 plus roll bar - maybe, used to be ok but rules changed a few years ago.

Sparco sprint seats - nope

Mca coilovers - ok as long as no part of car below 100mm from ground fully laden.

Whiteline front sway bar - ok

Full xforce exhaust - ok as long as under 90db per epa testing guideline

T2 LSD - ok

Mx5 mania cold air intake - depends on rwc tester, some don't like the firewall hole.

15x8 +15 wheels (little bit of poke) - nope, max is 25mm wider than stock, and max 25mm increase in track. No part of wheel may sit beyond the guard.

Just checked Vicroads website & no RWC required if certain conditions apply, in which case, when you attend Vicroads they'll probably only check the VIN & engine number:
'If the interstate vehicle registration is current or not expired by more than 3 months and is going into the same name in Victoria, a RWC will not be required to register your vehicle in Victoria.

A RWC is required if you have purchased a vehicle interstate or if the registration is cancelled or expired by more than 3 months. '

I would go to Vicroads in Burwood and get your situation checked- i.e. what process do you have to take. You might save +$150 for a rwc and the other issues. HKS is probably right on his checklist- most rwc checkers are only going to jump on things that stand out as non standard.

I thought the seats would be the big headache. They are engineered for qld - so fully legal at the moment.

If you are right clubman that would be awesome! Its registered in qld, so fingers crossed it wont need a full check!

Is there any hope for the seats to get modplated/engineered in vic?

Unfortunately interstate engineering/mod plates aren't accepted by vicroads.

As far as engineering goes, you need to go through a VASS engineer, the vicroads site has a list of them all.
I don't expect it to be cheap though.

Ideally if the no-rwc applies, go with that. That will be your best option.

Two things I see;
Seats for a different reason. The seats are ADR'd (I think), but they interfere with the seatbelt. Only way around it is to swap back to a normal seat or install a harness.
Wheels - a little bit of poke probably won't pass. It is too obvious.

If you can swap the rego, I don't know how stringent the guys at VicRoads will be. I suspect once they see the Mod Plate they will get picky.
Compare that with my story. I got my car Engineered and RWC, took it to VicRoads for the inspection. They were only interested in the Engine and Body numbers. He pointed out my aftermarket Momo wheel and said the Police may look at that - he did not do a thing though. Straight through, rego granted.

You could just try your luck at VicRoads and try swapping the rego. Worst case, you'd only lose a few $ Inspection fee and they would just turn you away and tell you to get a RWC.

The reason seats don't pass isn't so much the seat itself, but the mounting.

As you need to modify the factory rails to fit them, the rails technically need to have an engineer cert to confirm they have not been weakened etc.

As for the seatbelt, non standard (or equivalent) belts also need to be engineered to show they're mounted safely etc.
So no harnesses either.


But you're right that vicroads don't care, they are really there for the paperwork. As long as it's got doors and lights they'll usually just tick it off.

The seats are the old sprint juniors and are only FIA approved. I think things were a bit lax in QLD - they just wanted to ensure the rails were ok. I might have to end up searching for a new set of sparcos that are adr approved or find another seat which i can run a harness with for track.

It sounds like its unanimous that I should take the car as is to vicroads and fingers crossed things go well. I will put on the stock wheels though. A new set of wheels are also on the cards in the near future - some without poke.

If things do go well at vicroads: how do suspected defects work in vic? The police officer gives the notice and I would have to get that specific part looked at? Or does the whole car get looked at thoroughly? Immediate loss of points?

Vic defects come in two flavours.

Yellow and red.

A yellow is a minor one, usually just a fine and to fix the item listed.
The officer can however tick a box and make you get a full rwc.

A red one is a major, the car cannot be dríven at all until the defect is cleared (usually this is only for safety stuff like brakes, seatbelt, airbags)

Btw, OP might find the following post from early this year interesting as it seems Vicroads have changed more of their approach:

recently had to put a heavily modded mx5 through vicroads. long story short you will need copies of the engineering certificates accompanying the mod plates, and you need to send them to the vicroads head office, who will then contact the relevant department from the state that issued them, verify their legit and then they will green light your registration application, and you just need the standard transfer forms and rwc. You can get lucky sometimes and just rock up with a rwc and they may just pass it(they can legally, totally down to the judgment of the inspector). usually they cover their bums though, so its safest to get all the certs sorted out at head offie first. It took me 4 months due to original cert's being lost by the qld reg office in my case... but once you have the engineer's paperwork its easy.

Thanks Clubman, ill look through that info thoroughly. That post gives me hope! Ill have to look for the engineers paperwork when I unpack in melb. The engineer for the seats was a good bloke and would be willing to provide more paperwork if needed i reckon. The mod plater who did my rollbar might be a different story.

Ill have 3 months to transfer the rego - so i will have time. But as soon as i land (so to speak) ill start organising the paperwork so the transition is as smooth as possible.
