89 NA6 Steering Wheel specifications

Postby twr7cx » Tue Dec 05, 2017 10:16 am

I'm currently getting the 89 NA6 that I've just purchased ready for registration. It's fitted with a black Momo steering wheel (very common one judging by the Google Images). I assume that this is an aftermarket wheel.

According to the registration rules:

"If the original steering wheel was designed with a recessed or padded hub, the replacement wheel should be of a similar design."

Is anyone able to advise if the original wheel had such? I haven't been able to find a 100% stock standard interior picture of an 89 NA6 to check.

EDIT: just found this:

Is that the same Momo wheel with a crash pad fitted?

ADM NA6 was fitted with a black Momo leather steering wheel & centre pad as pictured by KevGoat.

Thanks. Looks like I need to source a centre pad then.

the rwc checker may well pass it anyway- they are not experts on every make and model and variation.

Yep. Some how I've gone from a supercharged EF XR6, to an BA XR6 Turbo, to an AU3 Pursuit 250 to a 1.6L NA MX5...

Yeah, it tends to be the police that defect the absence of the centre pad, but not on all NA6s they encounter.
Centre pads are scarce here, but more common in UK so check UK ebay etc, however note that there are two types, one that has 'Mazda' in the centre (ADM & UKDM NA6s), & one that has 'Eunos' in the centre (JDM NA6s). USDM had a different wheel as an airbag was fitted.

My RWC guy wanted a padded centre.
Then the guy at VicRoads doing the registration noticed my re-fitted un-padded Momo and said the Police would like that. VicRoads did nothing as he was doing the rego.

A handy tip, thanks. Are they compatible with each other? i.e. will either of them fit? I suspect that my vehicle is a JDM imported Eunos.

There is also a third pad, from the later NAs

It had the round "anus" logo that Mazda used briefly in the mid 90s before shifting to the current winged logo.

Eunos one.

And the standard "Mazda" one I can't find a pic of, but it's like the eunos one, just it says "Mazda"

Yep, as hks_kansei has indicated.
Ref JDM Eunos Roadster or not, VIN will have NA6CE in it, but if ADM Mazda MX5, VIN will be start with JM0NA306... as per in following: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=34871&start=135
