Tks Rocky, suspected as a non daily you had that option.

 M2, your inconsistency is showing.

No one has ever asked me about my tyres and if they did it would be they seem to be ok.

This kind of apathy by the majority of motorists toward braking and steering performance in an emergency or bad situation is why we have so many accidents.

Most (especially franchised) tire sellers will sell you what they've been directed to by industry pressures or the product they make the most money from - usually cheaply obtained Chinese (or other) crap.

Mr Morlock wrote:... they seem to be ok.

Seriously? That's your attitude? No matter how careful a driver is, they will be confronted at some stage with that one moment where they may only be saved by the grip they have to either stop or steer out of trouble - or die/kill someone through cheaping out or not caring what the tire fitter supplied.

I have never had the ability to safely test the "breakaway" limits of the tires I've had on my cars. But no matter which car I've owned, I have always made effort to do some research to ensure I have a tire fitted that has been tested and shown to have good braking and steering response.

I believe there should be more stringent testing, certification and control of tires sold and fitted to ensure they meet a minimum standard to stop some of the shockingly bad product being sold.

You guys really get sucked in by the hype. Tyres at a certain price range ( I didn't mention cheap tyres) -are all going to be about the same insofar as performance purpose and design is concerned. I know a few tyre experts i.e. people who run the businesses and when you have a price point and a what you want to use it for you get the same recommendations- plenty of tyre dealers sell a range of tyres- when the same tyre gets mentioned a number of times then you are pretty safe and lets be realistic most users want good all round handling, good wear and the going price.

Mr M - have you never read any of the back to back tests on tires? Same car, same driver, similar price points, same performance ratings etc etc etc ... results often show vast differences in braking distances wet/dry, cornering performances wet/dry and many other aspects like noise and wear. Tires ain't tires ...

I see both sides of this. Some of us - probably the guys that are able to do 'track days' - have a good feel for what any given set of tires is capable of - in THEIR hands. Those of us who only drive on the public roads probably try to stay well within the limits of the tire - as well as our OWN limits.
Occasionally I will 'give myself a fright' but because I try to stay within both those limits, I have always found a bit more in the tire/or my own ability, to get me out of trouble.

No-one can decide when they are going to reach the "limit" of their tyres performance if it happens as a result of evasive action!Cannot understand that people buy inferior tyres, sometimes putting them of the "old"or short journey car that takes the kids to school, great logic!

I would always buy well reviewed middle of the price range or better tyres.

I have had Michelin Ps2(ordinary),Ps3(much better) and now Ps4's(outstanding),;Yokohama S(excellent) Goodyear Eagle F1(outstanding) and also dríven on Bridgestone RE3's(great in dry,ok in wet) and don't think you could go much wrong in current versions on that list.

Agree with Rocky and PCM comments- couple of wise heads. Yes to Kevgoat I have read a few of the tyre comparos and the differential in stopping distances can be quite surprising but the track speeds are often not quite so pronounced and the track is not really comparable with roads- e.g. low noise and wear dont matter so much as the road car. I would never advocate cheap tyres on a sporting car partly because there is a likelihood its dríven with more verve than the SUV.

I'm up for a new set of tyres for my 2006 NC and was recommended Pirelli Dragon Sport 215/45R17 by my local tyre guy and he is doing them fitted and balanced for $135 a tyre, good deal?
The tyres on it (just purchased car) are great in the dry but are absolutely useless in wet conditions.
