Re: What have you done today/recently to your 5?
Oil in cans was available in Australia in the 1960's. I Remember it in the service stations and that was a time when cars actually used oil. Today very few people check the oil and add in a servo. Also beer was commonly sold and was popular in cans and not the alu version either - much harder to buy now- maybe it's fashion. I still prefer beer in a can because it stacks better and does not present a hazard from nasty glass and it tastes the same. You can readily buy the sugary poison in cans so why not beer. So what's new.

As an poor Uni student in the mid 1960's I vividly remember going from Carlton to Box Hill in a mates Lowlight Morris Minor. We were low on petrol and very low on $$.Pulled into an (unmanned) self service station.Between us we had 60 cents and i was entrusted to put the petrol in the car.Never having been to one of these "modern" set ups i put 40 cents into the slot and pulled the handle.A litre of oil in a can fell at my feet.Luckily the 20 cents we had left for petrol got us back to Carlton!
The guy who used to prepare my rally car in the 70's and is now doing so with my historic 1974 Lancer uses Japanese oil that comes in a can!! What goes around comes around!
Peter.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I built another set of "stealth indicators/parking lights" to sit behind the grills. Now Morticia has that similar look to Mindy. Works well on the black too!!

Re: What have you done today/recently to your 5?
I made this a while back, and i haven't posted on here for fages.
It's a sequential coloured sequence of starting up my number plate lights. Why?
A 10 minute coding of a microcontroller program to drive the sequence and its basically 2 components. the strip, and the controller. Plugged into 12 volts, this took less then an hour to remove from the car, fit the strip, code and resintall, and i've provisioned a programming cable in my bootspace to upload a new lighting sequence if ever the mood takes.
It has a three second delayed start when the parklights are turned on and then once the sequence has completed, it stays on a slightly warm and subdued white until the parklights are turned off.
In the real world, not many will notice this when it's turned on and runs the sequence, but it's a little something nice for those who do.
Image below shows shots from the video.
Video of it in action (hopefully the googles stays linked)

It's a sequential coloured sequence of starting up my number plate lights. Why?
- Because i had spare parts laying about,
- My previous rear lighting option wasnt positioned to light the number plate correctly,
- I knew it wouldnt take long to make,
- I have other sequential lighting bits on my roadster that this compliments.

As a tech-nerd I like it.
Good to see that when the sequence is complete it remains lit with the same subdued lighting - if it cycled continuously you'd attract the atention of Mr. Plod.
Triggering the sequence again when you brake would be cool, like an additional 3rd brake light - it would get the attention of the person begind you which is a good thing.

Droo is back!
I reckon here in Vic, Mr Plod would have a hard time noticing. This is due to all the weird and wonderful colour/texture combinations offered by Vicroads for number plates (you can get pink tinged plates now!)

Did you polish that yourself or get it done by a shop?
Either way, more details please, it looks "schmick"!

Hrs & hrs of sanding with 240 grade then brought it up to 2000 grid.Lokiel wrote:Did you polish that yourself or get it done by a shop?

The heat shield was pretty easy. Started off with 1500...up to 2000 the get at it with metal polish. I used stones from all the porting gear for tbe concave areas on the plenumn
I found starting off with 80 grid leaves very deep scratches which a real hard to get out. Same with using stones
