Washed under it for the first time in three years - my psychedellic yellow brake lines were "road grime grey". Everything is now a recognisable shade of the colour it was when it was new again, and after cleaning everything, I'm pleased to report the suspension is all still there.

While it was up and flying, I swapped the bushes on my sway bar ends for superpro poly ones as practice for doing the rest of them one day when I'm way more motivated!!

I've never done suspension bushings before but am doing them ATM. I always thought they'd be extremely difficult to remove as you hear about people burning them out etc but it's a pretty easy job though I did end up buying a bushing press kit off ebay, mostly for the various sleeve/cup sizes as that's where I got stuck the most. Little time consuming assembling the rod and cups etc but worked extremely well. If I wasn't powder coating the arms and doing other work as well I could easily do a full bushing swap in a weekend now, probably even one long day. Less if I had help.

Replaced the rear view mirror in my NC. It had deteriorated quite badly. Found a s/h exact replacement in perfect condition from a 2001 ford laser/Mazda 323. Who new!
$15 cheap fix.

Made a panel to mount window switches on lower part of tombstone. Looking ok after a few coats of plastidip.

A Nakamae centre console was to be installed however it became apparent that entry and exit is markedly easier if the trans tunnel is left bare to lean on, making power window switch relocation necessary.

Installed Audiolink into my Mk2.5 so that I can get rid of the FM transmitter.

Removing the head unit was a pain.

The Audiolink plugged straight into the CD changer. Microphone cable dropped down behind the steering wheel column and pulled through to the centre console.
USB Lightning cable plugged in, fixed with a cable tie and pulled out into the driver’s side footwell. This is not ideal, if the cable breaks, I’ll have to remove the centre console and fascia in order to replace it. I will have to think about a neater solution, maybe a USB plug in the rear compartment of the center console.

The Audiolink unit itself is simply jammed in below the cigarette lighter.

For a kick of the dash removal tools that I ordered from Amazon got lost. Then a really nice man from the AutoBarn store in O'Connor lent me his removal tools as he had none for sale.
Getting the old radio out was no where near as easy as it is made to look on you tube so the surrounds have a few small extra scratches.
I had removed the radio from my old NA and that was a piece of cake, as well the cage holding the radio in would have been easy to use with the Joying.
I have ended up the original springs attached to the Joying to make sure that it never falls out completely. I then bought some half rubber moulding from Clark rubber which is what holds the head unit firm. I'll see if I can take some pictures in the next few days although I have had a gutfull of getting it in and out, I'll see what I can do.
The unit its self is this one which I bought from Jordy on the MX5cartalk facebook page

So is the unit just wedged in place by the rubber?

I tried fitting an EONON unit and gave up because I couldn't mount it securely:
Image
- I MAY have been able to get it in securely using custom spring-loaded clips that clicked into custom slots but there was no way I'd be able to get it out again - the front fascia extending around the unit when it was mounted gave no access to the top, bottom or sides of the unit.

I ended up buying a Joying unit with a detachable face - the main unit was only a single-DIN size so I made a custom bracket for it and clipped the double-din detachable face into it - took AGES to get it all lined up nicely:

Helped a forum member install some new Tein dampers on Sunday.

Continued the shed clean up as have a new project starting at the end of October.

Started to get ready for the trip to Sydney as well as some minor adjustments to the car. Removed 8.1 kg of weight and gave it a once over also changed the wing angle to 5°. 2 more track days before leaving for Sydney so not much testing time left.

Found a collection of wheel nuts :(

This is where the 8.1 kg came from, interesting to see if it makes a difference...

Yes you are right, essentially the rubber moulding stops it moving while the spring clips will stop it landing in your lap if it ever does move.
Having gone through all the trouble of changing it I am now looking at selling the SP in favour of an SE. I will be more comfortable with something that is not so collectabble and that i won't mind changing from stock. Watch this space.

I drove an SP before I bought my SE and was very tempted, but had the same thoughts that I'd be too paranoid about modding it over an SE. Even on the SE I tend to only change what I can easily reverse.

Most SE owners "think" that they can easily reverse their modz but usually hit "the point of no return" when they run out of garage space to keep all the OEM bits or realise that it's just too much effort to revert back to stock.

Owning an SP would drive me nuts, I'm sensible enough to know that it's rare and should NOT be modded to preserve its maximum value but would always want MOAR POWA!

Instead of an SE, you should consider a N/A NB8C and turbocharge it properly.
The SE is a half-arsed turbo-charged car and you'll eventually replace all turbo-related components anyway so avold paying the SE-premium price and use the savings to buy decent turbo components.
These days there are good options available: NitroDann, TSE manifold and downpipe, Kraken manifold and downpipe.

As much as I always wanted an SE, now I've had mine a few years and done what I have, I often can't help thinking "what if" I'd just kept my NB8A and spent the difference on that!! I know which way I'd go with time over again ......

Have posted in a while. I had a new o2 hole welded into the extractors and tightened up a few leaky flanges on the exhaust.

Let the megasquirt tuning commence with a nice solid wideband reading!Image
