Hunting down squeaks and rattles and then fixing them has to be one one of the most rewarding experiences of my ownership of an NA! :D

Started to look for a 4.7 or 5.1 pinion/crown final drive. The 5.1 would be the best 'match' to my current setup, acceleration will be a lot more than the 4.3 and since I have never gone faster than 253kmh I can afford to sacrifice 40kmh of speed I will never use for increased acceleration.

SMSP?

Also, you said you wanted to put the car through a wiring diet. That's as extreme as you can. Full harness coming out?

The previous gearing was good for 253, best ever is 203 at SMSP. Therefore limiting the gearing at 213 (8,000 rpm in 5th) is a good plan.

Every existing wire removed, then a Racepak Smartwire with 2 x keypads will be installed. Horn, indicators, lights, wipers etc will all be on switches.

The oem wiring wasn't as complex as I thought when I stripped mine out. Will it be a pro install or are you doing it yourself?

I put a 4.7 in the racecar, also reasoning that trading unused top speed for acceleration was A Good Thing.

On short circuits, I did get a minor improvement to lap times, not so much on SMP GP. At SMS GP I was on the limiter in 6th before reaching the grandstand, and the lap times did not seem to show the sort of improvement I was expecting.

One drawback I was not expecting (but should have :roll: ) was the frequency of gear changing - the shift lights seemed to be ALWAYS flashing, especially on the tighter, shorter circuits. As a result I was losing concentration, getting flustered, and missing shifts. After looking at the situation, I bit the bullet, and replaced it with the 4.3 that was in the car before. I chose not to persevere, not to take the performance hit short-term as I backed off to re-learn the car in its new configuration.

YMMV. But I would think very carefully about a 4.7, and I would certainly recommend going to a 4.7, feeling happy with it, before going to a 5.1 :shock: Can you model the shift points for the different ratios for different tracks, where and how fast they come up?

Pro install Whitey's Wiring in Brisbane. They have done Smartwire installs before. The OEM may not be complex but it has been hacked up over the years and needs a complete re-wire. It still has most of the ECU loom still in.

Thanks. I have had a look at the data and at the moment the 5 speed box with a 5.1 will match a 6 speed with a 4.3 more closely for acceeration.

Will post some graphs soon.

Yes I can :) Will do the same for SMSP, but change the scale to track distance not time.

This is for the clubman at QR. Overall RPM is higher and the area at T4-T5 (37-38 seconds) is a much better situation, not line the previous change just on exit (red to green). 3rd can be held for much longer, however there could be an acceleration issue :(

Will also model a 5.1 diff. Since I can get it to work in Excel the plan will be to get it to work in the data logging software.

Drilled and tapped a billiard ball to try as a new gear shift knob... despite what the photo shows, the colour is quite close to Classic Red.

Nice.
Photos just don't do justice to how mint the interior and overall condition that cherry is kept in.
Perhaps the cleanest and closest to original showroom spec condition 5 I've seen!
An 8 ball gear knob was the very first mod to my first car, a three on the tree hj kingswood.

I have been messing with brake masters and new custom HEL brakelines.

Important side note, a certifying engineer or two were instrumental in the design and manufacture of the brake master plate and required mods, both applying their wizardry and other dark arts unknown to me to effect a safe design.

Ha! Part of the reason I did it was in memory of my old EH that had a 13 ball on its gear shift.

That's a beautiful job - both brake and clutch cylinders. Mind if I ask what bore size you ended up with, how you manage bias and how it all feels?
