Hi Folks.

Today was a big day. I visited my mate Rusty’s place to take care of some drive train work... Diff replacement, wheel bearing replacement, wheel stud replacement. My shed’s a bit cramped, but his is an absolute joy to work in, largely thanks to his hoist!!

Image

The rear wheel bearings were a bit of a job, but Rusty’s a pretty damn good fitter, so he made short work of them...

Image

The rear wheel bearing inner races needed some serious encouragement to part ways with the hub. We had to grind a notch into the inner race in order to release it from the hub.

Image

The diff installation went well too. Out with the NA6 diff and in with a 4.3:1 Torsen 2. Can you pick which is which?

Image

The “T2” on the bottom one probably gives it away a bit. According to the internet my NA6 diff should have blown up at my first race meeting, but it’s been a gem for me. I’m putting it’s longevity down to my super-smooth driver inputs and mechanical sympathy.

Sadly, the front wheel bearings hadn’t arrived, so they couldn’t be done yet. The same goes for the calipers - I’m waiting for seal kits to arrive.

And here’s a little teaser of what’s to come...

ITB’s!!!!!!!!

Are you replacing just the bearings or the whole hub?

Hi Magpie.

Thanks for keeping me honest! They will be supplied as a front hub assembly. I paraphrased incorrectly by saying "front wheel bearings", sorry. :D

Dammmm, I thought you were going to do this https://www.miataturbo.net/suspension-brakes-drivetrain-49/how-repack-front-hub-75372/ as I was thinking of doing...

He he, that looks like fun!

I’ll be honest, everything is happening pretty quickly at the moment. Some of the researching is... less than thorough. In this case, I inquired about wheel bearings with my local supplier and was told that rears can be bought as bearings, and that the fronts are only supplied as hub assemblies. That’s where the research stopped. I’ve ordered hub assemblies. I’d like to think I could handle the front bearing replacement, with a bit of help from Rusty, but I think I’ll just go with the assemblies.

One thing caught my attention in that tutorial... I’d be careful not to overpack the bearings. Some of the pics looked like he was heading into “over-packed” territory, but I could be wrong. Do your own research, but I’d be inclined to give the balls a bit more breathing space, so to speak.

Hi Folks.

Here’s another little success story. I found a set of Toyota 4A-GE Silvertop throttle bodies for a very reasonable price ($220), and these will be the heart of my Individual Throttle Body (ITB) setup on the new engine. They were old and grotty, but they appear to be in very good condition otherwise...

I spent a couple of hours last night cleaning them up with my little soda blaster (purchased from SuperCheap Auto)...

I’m really happy with the results!!

Mmmm..... Shiny....

Okay, confession time folks...

I made a boo-boo. When I rebuilt the front and rear hubs, I failed to upgrade the brake rotor backing plates so that my SE rotors fit in nicely. Damn! The SE rotors definitely aren’t gong to play well with the NA6 backing plates, so I’m going to have to do one of two things...

Option 1: Install SE backing plates, or....

Option 2: Modify my NA6 backing plates.

What are your thoughts folks? I’m inclined to go for Option 1, but it’s going to mean scrapping the bearings that I just installed ($180). Besides that, I’ve been hunting for backing plates and so far nobody is willing to separate them from the upright to sell individually. Direct from Japan may be an option, but I haven’t found a part number yet.

So, Option 2 is looking good for the short term. Does anybody have photos of modified backing plates, to give me some inspiration before I attack them with the tin snips and mash hammer?

Thanks in advance!!

It’s not all bad news though... The new front hub assemblies and wheel studs are installed!!

The NA6 rotors and calipers are fitted for now. I’m still waiting for my caliper rebuild kits to arrive!!

Just ditch the backing plates completely. You don’t need them for a track car, they just trap heat in there’s which you don’t want.

Just cut them off with tin snips, cold chisel. Won’t have to touch your new hubs...

Regards ITBs, I think I read you're not supposed to soda/sandblast around/inside the throttles as it affect the seal. I could be wrong though (someone correct me).

Hey rascal, thanks for the feedback.

I think I’m going to modify what I’ve got, with the aim of ducting air into that area to create a high pressure zone behind the disc. I reckon that will give me better air flow through the vents in the disc, which are “inboard” on my rotors (fronts only). The rears... Yeah, not sure. I’m still debating the merits of keeping them or ditching them.

Yeah, you might be right there. The soda blaster is pretty tame though, so I’m guessing it will be fine. It shifts loose stuff but I don’t think it would harm the alloy at the pressures that I was using. I stayed away from the seal on the TPS actuator shaft, so hopefully that’s fine. Everything else got a good blasting though.

I guess we’ll see. Fingers crossed!!

A quick update from this week...

Purchases:
1. Helmet: Bell GP5.
2. HANS device.
3. HANS / Helmet bag.
4. Gloves.
5. Battery isolator switch / cable kit.

Milestone 1.
The car was delivered to TrackArt in Bayswater, for the roll cage installation, due back in 2 weeks. I guess you could call this the “Before” photo...

Image

Here’s the cage design, cleverly done by TrackArt...

Image

Milestone 2.
The block and bottom end hardware all went off to the machinist, due back in 3 weeks.

Image

Image

Look at those rods and pistons!!!!

Image

Ange has been busy cleaning up rough areas on the block...

Image

Image

Milestone 3.
The head work has started, due back in 3 weeks. It all got sent off before I had a chance to get pics.

Issues:
1. I still don’t have my...
a. Camshafts,
b. Caliper rebuild kits,
c. Brake pads,
d. Coolant hoses,
e. Braided brake lines.
f. Hard top brackets (to replace the clips).

It’s been an expensive week, but most of it is safety gear. Motorsport is dangerous, but hopefully some of these items increase my odds of walking away from the big crash that I hope I never have.

Also... I’m crook as a dog. This business of burning the candle at both ends is taking it’s toll.

The fronts you can get to by just unbolting the front hub, so can add the bigger ones no issue.
The rears you need to press off the hub again which is a waste of time as you don’t need or want the rear ones. Just cut them off.
I’ve run without rear shields since added nb8b brakes 3 years ago and no issues at all. If anything the rear pads have run cooler, based on pad life.

Hi.
Regarding the post by bruce re throttle plate sealing. To ensure the plates are sealed get a bottle of nail polish paint around the edges with the plates closed open them let the nail polish dry and you now have them sealed. Thecheapest way to do the job.

Hey Folks.

It’s a weird time right now... I have no engine to tinker with; it’s all away getting machined and ported and whatnot. I don’t even have the car to tinker with; it’s with the cage builder. So I’ve been busying myself getting familiar with the electrical system, working out how the ECU is to be wired in, and making sure I’ve got the right sensors and such.

The big news is that I have committed to going with an all-singing all-dancing off-the-shelf instrument solution. I have ordered a 7” BTI Digital Dash from “Tuned By Shawn” in the States. They’ve aligned themselves with Adaptronic, and their display looks pretty slick. It means that I’ll need more new sensors, as most of the Mazda sensors won’t talk to the ECU, but I’m working through it. Here’s a link...

https://www.tunedbyshawn.com/collection ... -display-1

Image

Other big news... I bought a new helmet and HANS device. It’s a Bell GP5 Touring.

Image

Now I just need to work out how to get it to look like this without having to pay someone $1000!

Image

CAMS says I’m allowed to vinyl wrap it as long as I stick to the manufacturer’s instructions. So far, I haven’t been able to get any such instructions, but I’m working on it.

In some other news, I assembled something tonight!!!!!! It’s a welcome change. I haven’t assembled anything for sooooooo long. It seems like it’s been all disassembly and cleaning. I’m happy to report that the front calipers are fully assembled and ready to go onto the car. My new pads, caliper seal kits and braided lines arrived today, so I got stuck in!!! I love it when a box of goodies arrives, and it’s so sweet when it contains lollies, and STICKERS!!!!!! I love stickers.

Image

Another long awaited arrival landed today... My new oil pump and MLS head gasket from Flyin Miata...

Image

With a bit of luck the roll cage will be finished on Monday. If it all goes to plan I’ll be cleaning, sanding, masking and painting the roll cage and interior next week. The current plan is for the engine to come back to me in about three weeks. The clock’s ticking!!!!
