Re: Patchy's Fawlty Towers risk management. Enter at own risk
Had some major dramas in the last few weeks
broke cam sprockets,
got the car runnin g again. Broke Nunos car. Its now back in action.
got a knock on Feenixes engine. Originally suspected big end bearing. Towed the car home. That was 2 weeks ago
got a stethoscope onto the engine this weekend....and its coming from cams. Cams look fine. lifters look fine. can only be valve assembly or a dodgy cam belt runner.
will dig a bit deeper next weekend.
Had an emotional roller-coaster over the last 2 weeks.had everything from New engine to just a bottom end lined up.

Sounds stressful mate. I'm sure you don't want to do another engine swap out!

Re: Patchy's Fawlty Towers risk management. Enter at own risk
there are plans for the engine to come out before the turbo goes on. Upgrade rods, different pistons oil pump, clutch & so on. Ideally it would have been good to have an engine waiting for that. take one out, pop the waiting one in in a weekend.....but I wasn't expecting this so soon. I was expecting this 12 mths from now. Engine replacement right now does not fit into the plan. In any way , shape or form.
this weekend there will be action.....drastic action. I need to get to the bottom of it. I Will be in Europe for some time in a few weeks. If it doesn't get sorted by 2-3 weeks from now. she'll get parked for 12 mths when I come back once & the rego runs out.

Patchy's Fawlty Towers risk management. Enter at own risk
Long story cut short.
The new 1.8 is toast.
Sounds like a thrown bearing on the rod.
Compression is
180
85
180
175
Picked up a BP-Z3
1. Don’t have the ability to run VVT on MS2
2. Got big ƒü¢k off cams in the current head
3. Upgraded springs
4. Refreshed 10k km ago
5. Poerted
6 hero shave
So if I use the iold head with a square top manifold should keep a smile on my dial for a while.
The old engine will be rebuilt. Forged & so on.
Ready for turbo in around 18 moths.
By then......I’ll also be able to control VVT & get some super awesome cams reground suitable for turbo.
The low mount is ready. The 3 inch exsaust is also on the way. But now I’m broke.
I want to enjoy these cams for a while. Unlikely I’ll get the engine swapped before Christmas .
But the only thing I’m doing is the APR bolts for the head. & hope the rest holds up for 18 months

Damn, that sucks.
Your plan is solid though, just a PIA to swap the engines out after just a short time.

Sad to hear STM, especially after all the work you've done. Good to hear though that you plan to get more use out the big cams.

well I guess when she gets opened up we'll see if its my tuning or just an abused engine.

and Ive always wanted to build a motor....truly. I can take my time. Hopefully I have some spare cash to get oil pump and /or rods for cyber week early December

Re: Patchy's Fawlty Towers risk management. Enter at own risk
So some developments.
We had to get the engine into my kitchen so I could work on it.
and while we moved it onto the balcony....I noticed a little trail of oil.
so basically when removing the bolt it would leak out. In other words. someone had tried to tighten a bolt & tightened it too much & punched a hole in the sump.
a message to the person who sold me the engine & he sorted me out with another NB8B long block. which had a sump attached to it. Very happy with his assistance.
But first things first. The engine had to get its spot on the deck. Yes I did say the kitchen....but Thats a joke...
an additional Nb8B block with a damaged Crank nose
so Now I have 3 engines....in various state of disrepair.
