Re: PAR Gearset
Can we ask why you are looking at a PAR gear set?

Re: PAR Gearset
For an NA6 ...
Have you checked the price? And the performance?
If you need a stronger gearset, there are other options.

I never met a horsepower I didn't like (thanks bwob)

Re: PAR Gearset
get in contac5 with Mal Woods in Warwick he can make you a Tremec T5 to fit a MX5, uses OEM clutch/flywheel. More than likely cheaper than a gear set. T5 Has lots of ratio and gear choices...mk wrote:just want to see if they are any good

Re: PAR Gearset
Any good for what? A stock NA6? Boosted? Engine swap?
Why not a 6-speed? It will last longer than a 5-speed …
Of course, you have searched here, and on MT.net … ? There are options if you care to look.

Compared to the BMW option, the par gear set has got to be a contender don’t you think?

I don’t understand this option. The T5 box is rated to 300ft/lb which is about where the Mx5 6speed starts to have issues? Sounds like a lot of fab work, for an option that may not be much better. Maybe I am missing something.

Re: PAR Gearset
Lot of different t5 gearboxes out there and tremec tko boxes lot stronger than mx5 nb 6 speed box
Mustang v8 below has a built t5 trans

Ive heard tho some t5 style gearboxes dont like shifting over 6700 rpm dont know how true that is tho
Or with upgrades to t5 / tremec box can fix that so called problem

Re: PAR Gearset
Let's spend more than the value of the car on an overkill gearbox.

Re: PAR Gearset
This has been discussed on Miataturbo plenty but look at the amount of bracing ribs on the 6 speed compared to the 5.
The PAR gear set is stronger but it’s only half a solution there is still the problem of flex in the gearbox itself which is part of the problem of why the 5 speeds go pop.
That’s why you don’t see much on the PAR not many people run them as it’s more expensive than a 6 speed for half a fix.
The upper limit of a 5 speed is generally agreed to be about 250rwhp but this has a lot to do with the torque curve on the tune and the loose nut behind the steering wheel.
That’s a pretty big amount of power in our cars and also where conrods tend to start turning into steel banana’s.
The easy solution is by a 6 speed (roughly $1000) or buy 3-4 5 speeds for the same money.
Being NA6 the rear diff will be more of a concern unless already running 1.8 gear.
All the best with whatever you go with

Re: PAR Gearset
I’m keen on keeping it a 5 speed
I’ll be using it mostly for drag racing
Seems that there is a lot of mixed comments about the whole thing
I just wanted to know if people here that have used it
Thanks

Re: PAR Gearset
If it's for drag racing, what about an AUTO?
I don't know how a hi stall torque converter would compare with launch control, either would help avoid fluffing the clutch release operation.
