What have you done today/recently to your 5?

Postby StanTheMan » Mon Dec 30, 2019 7:48 am

Desperate times call for desperate measures . No place to do the work. Rego is due . So engine change was done in the street.

Well done Stefan - not ideal as you say, but at least you appear to be at the quiet end of your street.

Almost looks like an LS swap (if the white Commodore in the first picture was a bit closer...)

Let me begin this post by wishing you all a safe & prosperous 2020. This goes doubly for anyone affected by this most recent outbreak of bushfires.

While I was wiring up the new DRLs (separate post), having removed a headlight to improve access, I saw how corroded the outside of the reflector had become...

Image

Seeing the inside surface of the reflector had become quite dull in places, I figured it was time to replace both these (original?) lights. Today I fitted new Raybrig units. The following pic shows one fitted (passenger side), in comparison to the OE headlight.

In the process, I cleaned up some surface rust on the retaining springs and screws.

Looks like Raybrig is actually Stanley- at least that what is said on the net. My guess is that Mazda may have used Koito originally. Both Japanese lamp makers tied into the car industry. Sure the back of reflector will deteriorate over 30 years but the actual reflector inside surface is the most important. The lighting game has been taken improved so much with leds and affordability - gas discharge did not seem to last long at all.

Yes, Mr.M, Stanley is the manufacturer of the ‘Raybrig’ brand - apparently quite popular in Japan - and, yes, the lights I took out are branded ‘Koito’. From what I can tell, these headlights are aimed (pun intended) at cars with pop-ups. They do 7” x 6” rectangular lights as well. There’s even photos of NA’s on the packaging!
