NA6 Penite oil recommendation HPR30 20W-60

I expected this NA6 engine oil would have been discussed previously but am unable to find the threads from searching for such. Looking at what engine oil should be in my 89 NA6. The Penrite lube guide recommends the mineral HPR30 20W-60 https://www.penriteoil.com.au/products/ ... 60-mineral but MX5Mania Servicing page https://mx5mania.com.au/pages/vehicle-servicing indicates they're using the full synthetic HPR10 10W-50 https://www.penriteoil.com.au/products/ ... -synthetic

I'm not phased about synthetic vs mineral oil as I believe both in their modern offerings are superior products to what the Mazda engineers were intending to use in the engine back 31 years ago, but rather the viscosity, the Penrite recommendation seems rather thick. Are they assuming that the engine is likely fairly worn needing this or is there some beneficial reason for? For a good condition engine not using any oil would the HPR10 be a better choice?
Is there any other considerations for this engine such as the oils zinc levels etc?

Or anyone got a link to a previous discussion on this topic that I can read?

If it isn't completely worn out just stick some Penrite HPR5 in it, lots of zinc for the tappets, 5w/40 synthetic. Then forget about it.

Don't go too thin as it will just use the oil. I think 5w is a bit too thin and will lead to oil consumption.

It's still thicker when cold than it is at 100 C. It's just thinner than a 10w/X when cold. Actually I don't really care I've seen enough oil threads to do me a for a life time. Put treacle in it for all I care, but HPR5 is a good oil with a good amount of zinc in it, ideal for flat tappet engines. It's not the only option, but I like it because it's readily available, suits all of our cars that we own here and often available for half price, which is when I stock up on it.

I don't use it in the track toy, I use Penrite racing 10w/40 in that, it's a full PAO ester oil with even more zinc in it.

Hi.
Great advise from the racing engineers the only thing you are not aware of how many kms are on the engine. If it is an 89 with a lot of kms use 20w 50 like we used to use long ago in virtually all engines and give your engine good oil pressure as I assume it is a road engine.

I haven’t got any HPR5 on hand. To me it seems that all of the below would probably be ok in it. The Penrite Sin15 or Mobil1 are left over from previous vehicles no longer around and both have just the right quantity in them for a fill...

193,000km.
Just a fun toy car that might eventually make it out to a track for a play one day...
I think the Penrite HPR30 is meant to be the equivalent of a 20w-50 as they like to add an extra 10 on...

They'd all be fine. Average it out to 17W/58?

End of the day it's a 31 year old engine and the SNC at that so who know how much longer that's got until trouble begins!

Interesting stocking up on it- most oils have a use by date. Not long ago I was sold some "cheap "well known brand oil and noticed that it was near use by date. I returned it and got full refund. My inclination now is buy what I need and just have some for top up. I am betting very few of us look to see the use by date on oil.

Not something I do. The Penrite Sin15 and Mobil 1 are left over bottles that have been opened and partly used. E.g. a vehicle that required 5.5 or 6L of oil often means getting two 5L bottles.
The other three Penrite are all new. The HPR10 will be going into another car in the workshop and the other two will be going back for account credit.

twr7cx I am sure has a keen eye on not having old oil. Exxon Mobil have an expiry of 5 years and one may find a number of other Cos that have a use by. Mobil I bought was on the cusp of 5 years - 5 was is what they stipulate . Anyone interested take a look at there oil and see if there is a date for manufacture or use by. Storage for most of us in a garage which is subject to climate change- typically close to zero and up to 40 degrees and high humidity in some areas etc.
