So the engine builder called your neighbour and asked him to send it back because he'd realised his mistake? And presumably he's fixing it without charge. Honestly, in today's aftermarket that's a high level of service and integrity.

That's how I understand it. It is a small community, and word of mouth is probably pretty important. That engine is still untouched, never run, relatively simple job to rectify.

The broken one not so much, if the same offer applies - likely got metal shavings all through it, might/probably need a new crank, basically start the rebuild all over again. Costly for someone for sure!

Next time I see it here it will be resplendent in its new paint job, hopefully in a couple of weeks or so. 8)

That’s a bit exciting. It’s amazing what fresh paint can do

Fresh paint! You know your build is coming together when it's time for fresh pain!

Did you make sure to take a before photo for comparison?

Pain?! PAIN    Have you had a car/parts painted recently - it is going to cost me my first-born, unless someone tips him off and he goes into hiding. Really, it is a small sacrifice he should make for his old man, right?

I'm sure there is one somewhere. Better be, I'll need something to look at every 15mins to reassure myself it was all worthwhile ...

Thanks everyone!

If I'd had my druthers I'd have done it in something closer to Soul Red, but it had to match the bits that can be seen when you open the doors and bonnet - so that settled the colour choice, there was no choice really. It has come up very nice, but photos don't do it justice.

The front wheels are the problem, at least in that set. They show the results of my lack of appreciation of the significance of the differences between the R10 and R12 compounds. The R10's dust comes off easily, and does not set hard. The R12 dust needs to be removed quickly or is sets. The front ones will, I suspect, need to be chemically cleaned and probably repainted. The rears are relatively good, but can be improved. I am getting the names of wheel people, and seeing how much it will cost.

Depending on the outcome, it may be more cost-effective just to bite the bullet, buy a new set and sell these off as-is, for track work. Oh, and stay away from the R12s.

Speaking of the fronts, got some new wheels, put the car on the hoist for some work, take the wheels off to swap tyres to the new rims, and what do I find ...

Image

WTF, I have absolutely no recollection of ANYONE telling me about this! A straight edge shows only the merest hint of a bend, so it is not clear to me that any significant issues arise, beyond the obvious that it needs replacement, and 'how the hell did that happen?". On the latter, the only thing I can recall is the damaged wheel on that corner when I hit an unnoticed 'thing' on the road at decent speed, as far as I can recall it was the rack end on the car when I bought it. I have a couple of spare racks, so I can cannibilse one of them for the necessary piece.

Which leads to the other discovery ...

Image

What has caused this? It is on the sidewall more than the shoulder, suggesting that it is something other than toe or camber, all bushings and ball joints seem ok, no sign of rubbing anywhere, and both fronts seem equally affected.

I was to have a new alignment done, so I will have him look at the front end before he does the alignment, in case there is some work to be done there to remove/replace whatever is the problem.

Someone wrote Bent and forgot to tell you. Must have been during a wheel alignment?
